For nearly three decades the electric cooperatives of Colorado, Kansas, Wyoming and Oklahoma have conducted an outstanding educational seminar known as the Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp.  The camp is held in Clark, Colorado, north of Steamboat Springs.  After being selected by their local cooperatives as participants, nearly 100 high school students travel to Clark every July for this camp.

The seminar strives to help develop leadership skills that will assist students with the challenges they will face in the future.  During their week-long stay in Colorado, the students create their own cooperative, complete with a board of trustees and general manager selected by the students.

Campers also take part in legislative presentations, a light and high voltage display and a competition to build a tranasmission line.  Other activities students get to enjoy are exploring the Steamboat Village and Old Town Steamboat Springs, white water rafting, and touring the Craig Power Plant and Trapper Mine.

Students seem to really enjoy learning how an electric cooperative works and making new friends at the camp.

The Leadership Camp competition is available to all students in Harmon Electric's service territory who are completing their junior year in high school.  For more information contact Brad Whisenant at 580-688-3342 or by emailing brad@harmonelectric.com.
